2019 Recap and 2020 Goals

by Grace 3. January 2020 21:51

Hey Everyone!

Happy New Year!!!

Now that it's the new year, I wanted to give y'all a quick overview of 2019 and a few of my goals for 2020.

First off, I want to recap 2019. This was a hard year for me. I made some pretty big mistakes, and God had to teach me some tough lessons the hard way, in addition to this being a rough year for my whole family in general. But God's been faithful. My family came out stronger at the end of the year, and I personally came out stronger, and I'm excited to take the lessons I've been taught to heart and to apply them in the new year and see what the Lord has in store for me. So, without further ado, in 2019 I...

-Started working at the Freedom Foundation. As many of you know, I took Oak Brook College of Law's paralegal program and completed it October of 2018. To be honest I didn't really want to be a paralegal when I was done, but my Mom and Dad convinced me to apply for a job that a friend also worked for, and I was hired by the Freedom Foundation on January 31st. I've been so blessed to work with such great people who are so dedicated to freedom! Freedom Foundation focuses on releasing the stranglehold that public sector unions have on our government. In my time there I've helped file 2 cases in Oregon, helped file for intervention in a case before the Supreme Court (although sadly we were denied intervenor status) and have been able to help so many individuals who were being abused by their unions.

-Got a new baby brother!!! Joseph was born in February this month a couple days after my 19th birthday. Jojo is such a precious little chunker and I'm so glad God saw fit to add him to our family!!! Love you little buddy. ;) And yay for having 11 siblings!!!

-Was in 2 accidents. My escapade in December 2018 missed making that 3 accidents by 2 days, but mathematically all three accidents happened within the space of a year (within 365 days). I was involved in a bike accident in late July. I'll touch on that more in a future post, but I still haven't healed completely from it. I injured my leg and I'm currently going to physical therapy to regain strength and mobility in my left leg. Praise the Lord I'm still able to be up and about on my feet! I just have a limp. Anywho, more on that later.

Second accident was on the way back home from a Christmas party. I was riding with my 2 older brothers Isaac and Daniel and the vehicle slid on the road that we live on. Somehow we didn't roll down the hill on the side of the road and no one was hurt. The Lord was definitely watching over me this year.

-Competed in a national songwriting contest.I didn't win or place or anything, but submitting my music was a huge step for me and I was able to get some feedback on my music and tips on how I can be a better songwriter.

-Went snowboarding for the first time!I went with my friends Rachel and Hannah and with my brothers Isaac, Daniel, and Jacob. We all stayed at the beginner level hill for the most part, but then me and Jake decided we needed a hill that was a little more advanced. Isaac and Daniel had already gone to one of the hills that was a level up, and Jake led me to the one that he convinced me that our older brothers had gone to. Well, he was very wrong, but we found out too late... We got on the lift and got concerned as it went higher, and higher, and higher. Every time we got to the top of a snowy mountain, there was another snowy mountain. Finally, we got off at the halfway mark. The hill was extremely steep and we both ended up accidently rolling down the hill most of the way instead of actually snowboarding. And I'm telling you, rolling down a steep, snowy hill with a 4-foot board strapped to your feet is NOT fun. Let's just say we were both super sore the next day and I didn't let Jacob forget that one for a while. XD

-Flew out to Alaska! My friend Rachel occasionally works in Alaska from summer to mid-fall, and her older brother Josiah currently lives there, so I joined two of their siblings, Benjamin and Hannah, along with another friend named Chris to go and visit them. We had a blast! We did lots of fourwheeling, watched a ginormous junkyard that had caught on fire, went sight-seeing, flew a private plane and landed it on a desolate beach out in the middle of nowhere, made lots of tacos, and played volleyball with a plastic water carton in Josiah's kitchen. It was a blast!

-Bought my first car.I bought a little 2006 Ford Escape from my parents this December. ;) She runs nicely and hasn't had any problems since my parents bought it in January of 2019.

Okay! Now for my goals for 2020. I plan to...

Memorize all of Psalm 119.Psalm 119 is super interesting to me not only because it's the longest chapter in the Bible or because it's divided into 8-verse sections titled after the Hebrew alphabet, but because of its focus on the law, at least in the earlier sections of it. The writer constantly speaks of the greatness of the law and his love for it. And I understood that the law was good, but I used to wonder why he had such a passionate love for it. After all, the law is what condemned us to die, right? But then it clicked - God's law is beautiful because it directly reflects His attributes. We see God's holiness, justice, goodness, and love in his law. The law is based on the attributes of God, and that is why it is so beautiful.

Focus more on my passion for music.I want to get back into writing songs regularly and practicing singing and possibly do some recording this year, we'll see. I'm also considering going to a 2-week music school in Tennessee and another educational music competition thingy in Texas. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it work, but we'll see. :)

Get more healthy.I've been dealing with some minor health complications, plus dealing with my leg injury, and I want to get myself as healthy as I can and consistently think about what I'm putting into my body and what I'm doing with it. And I also want to get my leg as good as it can be, whether that means completely healed or with as little side effects from the accident as possible.

Save money.I tend to spend tiny amounts of money very often, so I want to cut back on spending money on random little things I don't need all year long, and I want to stop buying lunch on days I work because while it's convenient, the costs add up in addition to it not being very healthy. I want to save that money for more meaningful things, like flying out to see out of state friends and family or increasing my knowledge or donating to something worthwhile.

And finally, a couple things that will have happened by the end of 2020...

I will have worked at the Freedom Foundation for a full year!!! I can't believe I've been a paralegal for a full year! It's been an amazing journey. God is good!

I will be 20!!! I can't believe it! I've lived 2 full decades and I'm leaving my teenage years behind me!

I will have voted in a presidential election for the first timealong with several other siblings who will be voting for the first time.

Well, that's my 2019-2020 review! I'm tired... I better head to bed. G'night!

Now let's hear from you!

Are you excited for the new decade? What are some of your goals? Your favorite memories from last year? Things that will happen in your life next year?

Happy New Years Everyone!!!

by Grace 1. January 2018 23:33

Happy New Years Everyone!!!

It's hard to believe that 2018 is already here. 2017 has gone by faster for me than any other year before.

Like a friend of mine said on her blog, it's kinda sad to leave last year behind. It was a huge year for me. It set a whole new vision and purpose in my life - a completely different yet exciting new perspective. Unrealistic dreams became realities; some of which were dreams I never knew I had or fully understood.

But this year will be exciting for me too! God has a plan for this year that is just as big, wonderful, perfect, and challenging as last year was! And while last year was setting a vision for my life, this year is when I will start pursuing that vision. And I'm excited for that!

You know, as I sit here reflecting on 2017, I realize that I made some pretty BIG mistakes. But you know what? I grew a whole lot last year - probably more than I've grown in other years (I mean in character - according to our measurements of my height, I'm shrinking... Our statistics must have been off somewhere along the line). I faced some of my greatest fears (my mom's miscarriage, a car accident involving someone from my family (fortunately the family member who was in it was fine though) and tough timed exams).

And through all of this, I have learned so much about God. There is no one we take for granted more than God. Even when we are in complete awe of Him, we still cannot fully comprehend how great and holy he is. No other can be just yet merciful in the way that He is. And no one else can make an intricate plan for the life of millions and billions and trillions of people and make all of them unique in their life's story, their looks, and their personalities. In addition, none of us can even fully comprehend or understand Him, let alone understand the things He can.

And have you ever really thought about how much it entails to be perfect? I don't think that even Mary Poppins understood what it meant to be practically perfect in every way. (*Gasps*) Perfect in mind, pure of heart, spotless in actions and attitudes. And he accomplishes this easily. Not only from the throne of heaven, but on earth, He was PERFECT. PERFECT!!! That is no small thing. And if it wasn't for this perfect, holy, loving, just, merciful, caring, supernatural God, I would be living the same useless, miserable life that I had been living a few years ago.

Before I sign out here, I want to share with you a few things I did last year, things I want to do this year, and some of my goals:

Things I did last year: 1. I started school through OBCL to be a paralegal. This is one of the biggest things I have ever done!

2. I started a blog!!!

3. I made some new friends. I even made a friend through what at first was just an embarrassing accident... (shout-out to Grace)

4. I worked at many new events for TCB (a security and event staff company). I especially enjoyed Clackamas County fair in Canby, OR, but I enjoyed all of them.

5. I helped with a wedding. Ooh, this was so fun! It was such a beautiful wedding, too!

6. I overcame (partway, at least) my fear of timed testing. For those of you who don't know yet, for the three courses I've gotten grades for so far (there were four courses I had tests for last quarter) I got two -A's and an A (100%!). I'm still waiting for grades for the last one. :)

And that's just a fraction of what I did... I'm too tired to remember anything else right now. Just for your benefit, all of you, writing posts at ten o'clock is a REALLY BAD idea I'm finding right now. Should've done my New Years Day post this morning instead of two hours away from the end of New Years Day.

Moving on...

Things I Will Do This Year:

1. I'll turn 18. And in law terms, that means I won't be an infant anymore! (By the way, for those of you who don't know this, the law term for minors is infant...)

2. I'll graduate from law school. I finish in the first or second week of August, I believe.

3. I'll graduate from highschool. Yup, folks. highschool and College in the same year. Cool, huh? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. :D

Goals For This Year:

1. Be more friendly and outgoing and less shy and reserved. I'm too afraid of people. And being an introvert makes it easy to not even try to engage in conversation with others. I can easily go sit in the corner and write songs or poetry or something. And that's good sometimes, but not for the most part. I really need to push myself outside of my comfort zone and reach out to others more, and think more of how they feel instead of how I feel.

2. Practice piano, violin, guitar, and mandolin more this year. Something I didn't do too well with this year.

3. Memorize several passages of scripture. Another thing I didn't do too well with this year. I'd like to memorize Psalm 23, 119, and several other passages, but I'll go through and set more concrete goals in a few days.

4. Finish reading Lord of the Rings. Yup, this is PRETTY important to me and to another unnamed sibling who really wants me to finish reading it.

5. Work at a new event that I have not worked at before. There's a few more events throughout the year that I'd like to try.

6. Get my DPSST.

7. Work as a paralegal. Possibly even do some internship type stuff before I've finished schooling. We'll see.

8. Put the birthdays of all of my friends and family and extended family in my calendar and do something for their birthdays. Much easier than doing something for all of them at the same time on Christmas...

9. Finish our CD. Me and my siblings started this sometime last year... We really need to finish it...

10. I forget... maybe I'll remember tomorrow what I was going to put here. All comes from staying up to late. BAD IDEA. I'm a morning person, by the way. "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man (or girl!) healthy, wealthy and wise!" as Benjamin Franklin put it (although I obviously added the part in parentheses...)

Well, there you go! I'd better go to bed now... This post should get the longest post of the year award. Yay for any of you who actually read all of this... I'm very long-winded when it's late and I'm tired.

Happy New Year! And goodnight!

Now let's hear from you!

Are you excited for the new year? What are some of your goals? Your favorite memories from last year? Things that will happen in your life next year?

Song Suggestion: I Have Been Blessed

by Grace 2. November 2017 20:45

Hey everyone! Something called law school ate me up... so that's why I've been absent from my blog and why I've been out of touch with many of you. :/ But I've crawled out of my little hole of contract law books to once again post on my poor neglected blog. It's only a song suggestion, yes, but it's a very good one! If you like it, look into the Bontrager Family Singers website and blog. They're one of my favorite artists.

Here it is: I Have Been Blessed

Ah, it feels good to be back. Anyways. Back to the point. I'll try to post a weekly song suggestion so that you all can see if I'm still alive or not. And hopefully I can post some of my own inspiration on here sometime soon. My fingers are itching to write music but my textbooks are keeping me busy... We'll see what happens. (:

Blessings to you all and hope you are all doing well!

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? What have you been up to? Have you heard of the Bontrager Family Singers before? What are some of you favorite artists?

Patience my Child

by Grace 7. August 2017 21:45

Hey all! I'm back! Fire off the cannons!!!

Here's a song that I wrote recently. This is something God's been telling me a lot recently! If I have my way, this will eventually make it onto our CD, but my way doesn't always happen in circumstances like these... Oh well. We'll see what happens. At any rate, here it is and let me know what you think!

Patience My Child

CHORUS: Patience, patience my child

Patience, patience my child

I have the answer

And remember

That I'll not forget your name,

Patience, patience my child

VERSE 1: I was wrestling through a struggle

So I lifted it in prayer

And I waited for a while

But my prayer for this trial

Didn't seem to have an answer

I great despair I asked Him

If He had heard my cry

He smiled at me, and this was His reply

(Chorus)

VERSE 2: When you're faced with life's decisions

And you ask God what to do

But it seems the Lord above

Who's always looking down in love

Wasn't looking down at you!

Stop fretting for a moment

Know that He will make a way

If you listen close, you will hear Him say

(Chorus)

Now let's hear from you!

Did you enjoy this poem? Is God currently teaching you this lesson too?
