Remembering Hope

by Grace 24. December 2018 20:19

I once (actually fairly recently) had someone tell me, “I don’t believe in hope.” Those are some of the saddest words I’ve ever heard. My response was, “I believe in hope, but I believe there’s only one source.”

I think that a lot of us who are saved take hope for granted. We were given hope, and we live with it every day, hear about it every day, see it before our eyes every day. We get used to hope.

But if we take hope for granted, do we truly have it? When we take it for granted, we begin to look around and see the devastated world we live in. A world full of hurt, sin, messiness. We begin to wonder what the use of living is. We get caught up in our own struggles, misery and mistakes. We begin to define ourselves by what has happened in the past. We begin to lose sight of hope when we look at what the future seems to hold.

I had a rough year. One of those things that every conservative Christian girl things would never happen to them happened to me. I tried to take control on my own, trying to make the mess I was creating magically fall into place. I made mistakes. Things spun out of control and I was left with the tattered pieces. I hurt people badly, and I felt heartbroken and scarred. The thing I had longed for and worked for more than probably anything else this year fell like a delicate glass frame on a rude, concrete floor and shattered into pieces. And those pieces cut me. I cried a lot, and spent a week in despair, barely eating.

But then I remembered I had hope. Hope for healing. Hope that my mistakes did not define me. Hope that healing could be rendered to those I had hurt. Hope that the meaning in my life that I had forgotten could be restored.

Christians, have you ever stopped at all to think about how those without Jesus feel? How they truly don’t have hope? Think about it. What do they have to live for? How meaningless do you think life is for them? Don’t take hope for granted. Cherish it with everything you have in you. It’s one of the most precious gifts God gave you.

And to my dear friend who doesn’t believe in hope (though I don’t figure you’re reading this), and to any other unbelievers who may stumble across this post, like I said earlier, hope comes from only one source. But there is an abundance of it, and if you truly seek it, you will easily find it. Hope came in the form of God humbling himself to come in the form of a baby, born amongst animals and laid in a manger, and was made abundant and free to all who believe when that baby died on a cross for the sins of man.

Yes, my friend, I understand: this world is a disaster right now. Sin runs rampant. Hurt abounds. But we have hope because, where sin did abound, grace did much more abound. We have hope because God, if we humble ourselves as he humbled himself, and submit to his will, will free us from the chains of our sin. If we only give our hearts to Him (which, being that He is our Creator, belong to Him anyways) we can have hope that although we turmoil in sin down here, and live a life of struggling against evil and hurt and pain, one day it will all be over, and we’ll live in peace forever on that beautiful shore.

Merry Christmas to you all, and a happy New Year, and may we all enter this new era of our lives with renewed hope and invigorated faith.

This is a song I wrote shortly after having the aforementioned conversation and several similar ones with my unsaved friend. In the devastating times we live in now, it's important to remember that even in there's mess, we have hope, God still loves us, and through His strength our faith can remain strong.

There is Love

Verse 1: You say you don’t believe in goodness, you say you don’t believe in love.

You’ve lost your sense of purpose and your faith in God above

You don’t trust anybody, and you’re hurting from your past

And you invest your life in things you know aren’t really gonna last

Chorus: But I tell you there’s a God that really cares

And He has a purpose for each single life

I tell you there is goodness everywhere

Despite the sin and strife

And I tell you there is hope for where you are

And with faith that you can step on every star

And emanating from God’s throne above

I tell you there’s love

Verse 2: I know you feel you’ve been forsaken and that your life has always seemed so wrong,

But God has authored all your circumstances and He’s been with you all along

He’s waiting for you now with arms of love and care

He wants to help you on this journey and all your burdens share

I Know Who Holds the Future

by Grace 30. May 2018 23:18

I Know Who Holds the Future

I can't tell you what tomorrow holds
Whether joy or pain for you
I can't tell you what it holds for me
What I will say and do
I can't tell you what may happen here
Or in other distant lands
I don't know what the future holds
But I know Who holds it in His hands

I can't tell you who your friends will be
Whether they'll be strong and true
I don't know the people you will see
Or what they will think of you
I don't know who I'll meet on my way
Or with whom I then will stand
I don't know what the future holds
But I know Who holds it in His hands

I don't know if I will live a life
Filled with pain and agony
Or if I will have a journey home
Filled with joy and luxury
I don't know what lies before me
I don't know what God has planned
I don't know what the future holds
But I know Who holds it in His hands

Now let's hear from you!

Did you enjoy the song? Are you looking forwards to the upcoming Q&A video?

Sparkle In the Rain

by Grace 27. May 2018 22:17

Hey Everyone!

Here's a song I wrote recently. No matter what we may face, there's always something to be joyful about in each circumstance. Don't miss the sparkle in the rain!

Sparkle In the Rain

Chorus: In every drop of rain there is a sparkle,

In every bout of darkness there's a star

In every barren desert there is life

For every night a daytime isn't far

For every single trial there's a blessing

When all seems lost hope still remains

For every hard today there's a tomorrow;

Lord help me see the sparkle in the rain

Verse 1: Everybody in this life

Faces his or her own trials

And oftentimes if feels so hard

To meet our troubles with a smile

But our Protector's always with us

Helping us to run this race;

So remember this, oh child of God

In everything you face...

Chorus: In every drop of rain there is a sparkle,

In every bout of darkness there's a star

In every barren desert there is life

For every night a daytime isn't far

For every single trial there's a blessing

When all seems lost hope still remains

For every hard today there's a tomorrow;

Lord help me see the sparkle in the rain

Verse 2: So when a loved one slips away

Think of the new life they have

Confrontation from the darkness

Show what you really believe

Fright'ning circumstances show us

That our faith can conquer fear

When you're weary and you can't go on

Rest through Christ is near!

Chorus: In every drop of rain there is a sparkle,

In every bout of darkness there's a star

In every barren desert there is life

For every night a daytime isn't far

For every single trial there's a blessing

When all seems lost hope still remains

For every hard today there's a tomorrow;

Lord help me see the sparkle in the rain

Now let's hear from you!

Did you enjoy the song? What's the sparkle in the downpour you're in? Does anyone else here struggle constantly with accidentally spelling "sparkle" as "sparkly"???

Late Night Inspiration!!!

by Grace 7. May 2018 00:57

Hey y'all! Let me know what you think of this:

Chorus: He forgives, He understands

Just keep clinging to His hand

He can see your weary heart

And when things seem to fall apart

And when you fail and make a mess

There's no need to stress

Just hold to His hand; He understands

Verse 1: I've made mistakes that I can't fix

And I am bearing a load of stress

I stay up too late, get up too early;

And my life just seems a mess

Sometimes I feel like I'm a failure

I need relief; pure release

But when I turn to my dear Savior

I suddenly am filled with peace.

Verse 2: Perhaps you're struggling to stay afloat

Lost in tunnels of work you've built

A million things you cannot do

Plague your mind with endless guilt

You've lost you're strength; you're tired out

You don't think that you can go on

Fly to the Father's waiting arms

He'll give you hope and a new song

By the way, what do you think I should name this song? I was going to call it "He Understands" but I already wrote a song called that (read it here).

Okay, it's late here... I'm headed to bed! ;) Sorry this post was kind of choppy...

Now let's hear from you!

Did you enjoy this song? Any suggestions for the title? Do you ever get late-night inspiration?

Lord I'll Be what You Want Me to Be

by Grace 7. April 2018 19:55

Hey everyone!

Here's a song that I've written a while ago, but it means a lot to me still. It's one of my favorites that I've written. Some of you that know me might have heard me mention it before -- I am currently working on an arrangement of it with piano, cello, and violin.

Let me know what you think!

Lord, I'll be what You Want Me to be

Chorus:

Lord I'll be what you want me to be tho' the way seems foggy and unclear

Lord I'll do what you want me to do I will cling to You and never fear

For you're holding my hand

Lord I'll be what you want me to be

Verse 1:

I'm tired of fearing, and not believing in Your Sovereignty and grace

I'm growing weary of not trusting You to carry me through everything I face

I'll not be standing idle longer while I hear you calling after me

I'll follow You,

Lord I'll be what You want me to be

Verse 2:

I'll take a breath, and hold Your hand while You lead me down this path I do not know

I will follow Your direction even when Your plan to me you do not show

I am trusting in your promise that You'll always do what You know's best for me

I'll cling to You,

Lord I'll be what You want me to be.

To be honest, I made that second verse just now... I started putting it up here and I thought, "This needs a second verse!" And that was easy for me to do because I've been learning to release my desires to God and be what He wants me to be.

But that's a story for some other time. ;)

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? Do you have any ideas of how I can significantly shorten the title??? That's one thing I have trouble with... Titling songs. My titles are always WAY too long. Y'all have probably noticed that though.

Random Tidbits/Poem

by Grace 3. April 2018 16:54

Hey everyone!

I haven't been on here very much have I? I thought I'd drop by and say hello really fast. ;)

A few things:

1. Due to how busy I've been, I will not be posting from either series tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be posting the Family Focus series next week. Some of you may have noticed that I actually posted the first post last week, but because of a few issues I took it down. ;)

2. It's my Mom's birthday tomorrow! Happy Birthday Mom! Love you! Hope you have a wonderful rest of your year while dealing with me. ;D

3. The GIVEAWAY ends the day after tomorrow! If you commented but your comment hasn't shown up yet, if you haven't gotten all of your possible entries, or if you just haven't entered yet, NOW is the time to do that!

4. I got a shot today. I injured my hand a while back and we haven't been able to find out what the matter was. I went to a local doctor, but she didn't know what was wrong, so she sent me to someone else who looked at it today. He seemed very knowledgeable. It was a huge answer to prayer! However, my hand is kinda puffy and numb so I'm avoiding the use of a certain finger... If you ever have your finger numbed, try typing with it and you'll see what I mean!

5. Y'all should listen to this song. ;) My Rock

Like I said before, I'm extremely busy. I have a wedding coming up that I'm going to be a bridesmaid for. I have several assignment deadlines coming up. I have friends going out of state this month and had one leave last month. I just had a doctor's appointment and I have a followup scheduled. It's stressful, and I'm always fearful that I won't be ready for my next quarter finals. Yep, still afraid of quarter finals. I've done just fine on my other finals - much better than I could have hoped for. But I'm still afraid.

It's funny how the devil can make you fear for things that God has helped you conquer over and over and over again. For some reason, the situation is always "different"... Well, it's usually actually mostly the same as last time. It's just a lie that the devil likes to use.

But it's convicting to read the words "Oh you of little faith!" and "casting all your cares on Him". Instead of focusing on the lies Satan uses, I need to focus on the truths God gives. We've been through this before. God's proven Himself faithful. I have no valid reason to fear or worry. ;)

Well, that's me and my life for now. I had better run now!

Why does the day have to be so long
And why does it feel so short?
Why does getting up earlier
Feel like a last resort?
How does my list of things to get done
Grow so big, so fast
And why does the morn seem slow, so slow -
When I start work, I think 'at last'.
Why do I feel irate and want
To get tasks done and over with quickly
But the thought of an upcoming deadline
Makes me cringe and feel queasy?
Why do I feel afraid at all?
I've been through this before.
God's given me all the strength I need
That and plenty more.
Help me Lord to not complain--
Not to fear or stress.
I have You to see me through
That should fill me with happiness.
Things will not be easy
You never said they'd be.
But that's okay, 'cause You're here to stay.
You'll always be here with me.

Now let's hear from you!

Did you listen to the song? What's been going on in your life? What have you been up to? Have you entered the giveaway yet? Did you like my title-less poem?

Looking Higher, Reaching Farther

by Grace 19. December 2017 10:26

Hello everyone!

You don't mind if I post songs that have nothing to do with Christmas during the Christmas season, do you?

If you answered no to that question, then good. If you answered that you do mind, don't look at this post until Christmas is past and you'll never know I posted it during the Christmas season unless you read this part of the post or look at the date on the top.

Here's a song I wrote recently (oh, by the way, if you couldn't tell already, it's not a Christmas song). I haven't completely decided what order I want the verses to be in, but I'm thinking this is probably how I'll keep it. Hope you enjoy!

Looking Higher, Reaching Farther

Chorus: I'm looking higher, I'm reaching farther,

I want what's better, I want what's best

And so I'll stand uncompromising

Whenever I'm put to the test

So I'll keep walking on the narrow and straight

I'll be watching, and I will wait

I'm looking higher, I'm reaching farther

Than this world could ever dream

Verse 1: I'm not defined by what others say

Or by the standards of the day

I am defined by my faith in Jesus

And what he's done for all of us

Verse 2: I will not settle for the first man

Who says he loves me and asks for my hand

I'm waiting for the one God has chosen

I'm waiting for a godly man

Verse 3: When I am ever tempted to fear

I will remember that the Lord is near

I'll trust in Him; I'll fear no evil

For everything's in God's control

Verse 4: I won't judge my worth by how I feel

'Cause what I feel often isn't real

I get my worth in Christ alone

The greatest status ever known

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? What did you think about the order of the verses? Did you have a favorite verse? Were you irritated that I posted something that wasn't Christmas-related during the Christmas season? If so, I don't really want to know...

Song Suggestion: Christmas Songs Medley

by Grace 14. December 2017 23:33

Hey y'all,

I'm pretty busy so I can't chat, but I thought I'd post this for y'all. I thought it was pretty fun and it was funny at some parts. I don't usually listen to songs like "Jingle Bell Rock" or "Santa Clause is Coming to Town", but this little medley done with a more southern gospel flare was fairly amusing!

Better run y'all, hope you enjoy it!

Did you like the song? Sorry I'm in such a hurry, everybody. Hope you enjoyed it!

Song Suggestion: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

by Grace 12. December 2017 15:19

Hey everyone! Let's have a show of hands for how many of you like gooood a'cappella music!!! Oh, wait. Never mind. Guess I can't really see your hands. ;)

Anyhow... Here's the song. This is the best version of this song out there, if you ask me. But so many different southern gospel groups all sing this same song that way, that I could probably put a recording of a different group singing this exact same version (with minor tweaks, of course) every day for the rest of December. But I won't do that. So far, I think this is my favorite recording that I've heard yet. Without further ado, here's Triumphant Quartet singing God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? Have you heard this arrangement before?

Special Post: Poem/Song Suggestion

by Grace 7. December 2017 21:08

Hey everyone!!!

I have something special for y'all today! (: Here's a poem I wrote a few years ago:

Humble Baby Born so Low

Humble Baby born so low,

Put inside a manger bed;

Born within a noisy stall,

With no pillow for his head.

Shepherds left their flocks to roam

Gazing at the Christmas star,

Gathered staffs and headed out,

Went to Bethlehem so far.

Wise men followed the bright star

With myrrh frankincense and gold

As gifts for the little child,

This a tale to be retold!

Thank God for his gift of love

That he gave us Christmas day,

Let us show our gratitude

By walking the holy way!

Copyright © 2014 by Grace Helland

Now here's the special thing about this post - follow this link and go to 40:41 and you will see us performing this song last year at our Christmas program! I know some of you have asked if I could post a video of me singing some of my songs in the past, so I thought you all would like it. (: I wrote the lyrics, created my own tune, and then wrote out all the four harmony parts. Hard work, but I love doing it! It's a passion of mine! I wish I had more time on my hands to do it. (: Anyhow, enough of my chatter. ;)

P.S. Credit to my siblings Abigail and Daniel for key change suggestions and having one person start and then everyone gradually join in on the first verse. <3

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like my song? Were you happy that I FINALLY posted one of my own songs for you to hear? How did you like our a'cappella arrangement that I made? Do y'all know HOW EXCITED I was to share this with you????? ;)

Christmas Song Suggestion: Ring Christmas Bells

by Grace 3. December 2017 13:01

Hey everyone!

Since there's only like 4 weeks until Christmas, I'll be sharing Christmas song suggestions more regularly than once a week. Here's a treat for y'all: the song I'm sharing with you is a video of me and my siblings singing "Ring Christmas Bells" last year at our Christmas concert that we had at our church with some of our friends. The order we're standing in is: Abigail, Jacob, Daniel, then me. Hope you like it! Let me know what you think. (:

Ring Christmas Bells

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? Do you think we did a good job with it and used a good arrangement? Would you be interested in seeing more videos of us singing songs? Comment and let me know your thoughts!

Song Suggestion: Thankful

by Grace 24. November 2017 17:48

Hey everyone!

Here's a song for the Thanksgiving season! It has a little mix of bluegrass and southern gospel. I've not been too impressed with some of this group's more recent songs (a little too modern for my taste) but I did like this song. The track for this song kind of makes me think of the Bontragers a little bit (I posted a link to their song "I Have Been Blessed" a few weeks ago).

Well, anywho, let me know what you think of this song!

Thankful

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? What are you thankful for? Let me know in the comments!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Song Suggestion: I Have Been Blessed

by Grace 2. November 2017 20:45

Hey everyone! Something called law school ate me up... so that's why I've been absent from my blog and why I've been out of touch with many of you. :/ But I've crawled out of my little hole of contract law books to once again post on my poor neglected blog. It's only a song suggestion, yes, but it's a very good one! If you like it, look into the Bontrager Family Singers website and blog. They're one of my favorite artists.

Here it is: I Have Been Blessed

Ah, it feels good to be back. Anyways. Back to the point. I'll try to post a weekly song suggestion so that you all can see if I'm still alive or not. And hopefully I can post some of my own inspiration on here sometime soon. My fingers are itching to write music but my textbooks are keeping me busy... We'll see what happens. (:

Blessings to you all and hope you are all doing well!

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? What have you been up to? Have you heard of the Bontrager Family Singers before? What are some of you favorite artists?

Patience my Child

by Grace 7. August 2017 21:45

Hey all! I'm back! Fire off the cannons!!!

Here's a song that I wrote recently. This is something God's been telling me a lot recently! If I have my way, this will eventually make it onto our CD, but my way doesn't always happen in circumstances like these... Oh well. We'll see what happens. At any rate, here it is and let me know what you think!

Patience My Child

CHORUS: Patience, patience my child

Patience, patience my child

I have the answer

And remember

That I'll not forget your name,

Patience, patience my child

VERSE 1: I was wrestling through a struggle

So I lifted it in prayer

And I waited for a while

But my prayer for this trial

Didn't seem to have an answer

I great despair I asked Him

If He had heard my cry

He smiled at me, and this was His reply

(Chorus)

VERSE 2: When you're faced with life's decisions

And you ask God what to do

But it seems the Lord above

Who's always looking down in love

Wasn't looking down at you!

Stop fretting for a moment

Know that He will make a way

If you listen close, you will hear Him say

(Chorus)

Now let's hear from you!

Did you enjoy this poem? Is God currently teaching you this lesson too?

He Understands

by Grace 13. June 2017 12:19

Hey everyone! Here's a song that I just recently finished writing. Let me know what you think! And, please, if you're willing, take a close look at it. Be critical. See if there's anything I should change. Does it stay on topic? Is it clear? Does it make sense? Does it flow? Especially if you've had any experience in analyzing literature. I want to make this as good as possible. Don't be afraid to offend me if you see things that need major changes. If you don't feel that whatever you have to say should go into a public comment, you can go to 'Contact' and get a hold of me through there.

Thanks!

He Understands

Verse 1: Things in this world

Do not always go right

Sometimes it seems

There’s no reason to fight

But cling to the Lord

Trust that He has a plan

Rely on His wisdom

And hold fast to His hand

Chorus: For God understands more than anyone can

And everything flows under His pure command

In your deepest despair He will always be there

Just trust that it’s in His plan

And that He understands

Verse 2: Our heavenly Father

Wants what’s best for us

He counts it as joy

His children to bless

But trials are part of

Our spiritual growth

The good times and bad times

Our Lord planned them both

 It’s still gonna hurt

And you’re still gonna cry

You’re still gonna wonder

And you’re gonna ask why

But I know He’ll give grace

Right through to the end

And will remain

Your truest friend

Bridge: When you walk through the Valley

Of the Shadow of death

When you face storms of life

Or the pangs of regret

When you're weary of life

And you can't see God's plan

Just rest in His grace;

For He understands

Now let's hear from you!

Did you enjoy this song? Any suggestions for change?

I'm Moving Up to a Mansion Bright/Upcoming post(s)

by Grace 5. June 2017 22:05

Hey everyone! Here's the words to a song that I wrote in 2014. Enjoy!

I'm Moving Up to a Mansion Bright

Verse 1:I'm moving up to

a mansion bright

I'm heading upwards

to love and light

I'm going home to

see my Lord there

A land to dwell in

Without a care

Verse 2:

I'm going to see

those who have gone

Before me when their

race had been won

I'm gonna greet them

on that glad day

And we'll be happy

in every way

Verse 3:

When up to heaven

I finally rise

I will rejoice

Within paradise!

I'm gonna shout of

God's victory

I'll join the song of

Grand Jubilee!

Chorus:

I'm going upwards

to see Christ there

In all His glory

so bright and fair

I'm going upwards

I'm headed homewards

I'm going up to

heaven so fair

Also, I was thinking of maybe doing something special, like interviewing someone, having someone do a guest post (by the way, check out the 'Shout Out to Fellow Poets' on the sidebar!) doing a post-a-day for a week challenge, or having a Q+A where y'all ask questions in the comments and I answer. What do y'all think? If I were to do one of those, which would be most interesting to you?

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? Any suggestions as to how it could be better? And what d'y'all think of a special post/post series? What would you suggest? Do any of you have any topic suggestions for future poems?
