Chain Poem!

by Grace 23. May 2018 17:52

Hey Everyone!

I thought I'd try something, see how it went...

I'll start with a little rhyme, and then the next person can add another small part to the poem, and another person can add another part! I've seen people do this with stories, but I wondered if I could do it with a poem. We'll see if it works out.

This is for the 'non-poets' as well as those who do write! And use your imagination -- It can be silly or serious! Just have fun with it. ;)

Out among the daisies,

Dancing in the sun;

Pretty little thing,

Unseen by all but one...

Now it's YOUR turn!!!

P.S. Cut off date for questions for the Video Q+A is May 25th. ;)

SOFP ENTRY!!!!!!

by Grace 16. March 2018 15:26

Hello Everyone!

As you all can probably tell already by my excessive exclamation points in the title, I'm super excited about this entry. I hacked into my sister's files *grins evilly* and stole a poem out.

Okay, I got permission. ;)

Anywho, I got it. Now, if there was ANYONE I ever envied for their poetry-writing skills, it's my little sister. She can add meaning and depth to her writing like no one else can. Fortunately she doesn't write a lot of poetry or else I'd go out of business... Totally kidding!

Alright. Here it is!

Looking Through My Crystal Window

Looking through my crystal window

My forlorn eyes meet a fragile rose;

A vibrant red, resolutely rising,

With face turned up, this flower grows.

How do you climb, so all alone?

How did you weather the Winter’s frost?

Roots of steel, a determined stem

You reach for the sky, at any cost.

Looking into your house so bright

I could’ve dreamt of what I don’t own.

Whispers of warmth welcomed vain wishes

For in the cold months I’ve grown alone.

But I know that Winter passes

And envious thoughts don’t help a thing.

My name is Hope; a budding flower

Who always believes there is a Spring.

Beautiful, isn't it? All of the alliteration sends shivers down my spine. ;)

Before y'all leave, check out my recommendations page on the sidebar!

Now let's hear from you!

Did you enjoy Abigail's poem? Be sure to let her know in the comments! Would YOU be interested in doing SOFP? Did you check out my recommendations page on the sidebar?

Questions and Answers Part 4: My Answers - Pt. 2

by Grace 26. February 2018 12:06

Hey Everyone!

I'm back with the rest of the answers... Sorry it took so long!

Olivia's Questions:

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Cookie dough hands down! I LOVE cookie dough icecream! It's been my favorite for years!!!

Favorite season?

Fall! I love the changing colors of leaves, the crisp air, the ripening apples and pressing cider!

Favorite holiday?

Christmas, without a doubt. I LOVE Christmas. It's a day we always spend at home together celebrating one of the greatest events in history - the day when God came down in the humble form of a baby to be born in a manger to save the world!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Hmm... I don't know! Maybe Corrie Ten Boom's place, or NQC, or the Alamo in Texas, or to visit an out of state friend, or something like that!

Or actually... I want to go to a coast where it's actually WARM!!! I love the beach, but it's always cold here in Oregon. Last time we went it was freezing. Me, Abigail, and a friend still waded around in it until I fell in (on accident!). But it would have been much more fun if it was warm. Then falling in wouldn't have been a problem, being that the only reason I didn't want to get that wet is because it was so cold.

I thought it would also be fun to go to OBCL's alumni retreat this year too (unless that's next year - can't remember), but I'll worry about that a little more when I'm actually an alumni! Haha!

If you could take only one person with you, who would it be?

My sister Abigail, probably! But it'd be fun to take my brother Daniel or my other brother Isaac. And it would be fun to take my friend Mal with me too. ;) It really depends on where I'm going!

Grace F's Questions:

What is your dream instrument?

Tuba! No, not really... ;) I'd love to have mandolin lessons! Or double bass too. I'd also love piano lessons. And guitar. And harp. And viola. And banjo!!! Okay, okay, okay... Well, if it's something I've played before but haven't had lessons for, it's gonna be mandolin or piano. But if it has to be something I've haven't played at all, it's probably harp. Viola isn't as pressing because I can play violin/fiddle. Can't be much different, right? Especially since I've played a 5 string violin before. And banjo... I'd love to play it but not as much as harp. Isaac is really good at it so I don't need to play banjo. Guitar and bass lessons would be awesome, but I can already do at least 5 chords (on my good days I remember one or two more ;).

What is your *favorite* Bible verse?

Romans 5:20 "...Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound..."
If you study law for any length of time, you realize how bad this world really is. Sin is everywhere, choking the life and purpose out of millions, causing death, causing pain, causing tribulation, strife, envy... It's sickening. Some of the sin that goes on in this world is unconceivable. You feel hopeless looking around. Offence abounds. It doesn't just lurk around in the dark corner. No. It's everywhere. In the streets in the form of the form of impatient commuters and reckless or drunk drivers. In the business place in the form of greed and envy. In our Government in the form of tyranny and abuse. In our own homes in the forms of heated arguments, rebellious teens, ungrateful children, insubmissive wives, and fathers who don't lead their families in God's truth. And rooted deep within the human heart.

But wait! Wait! There is still hope! because where sin is now thriving, "grace did MUCH MORE abound..." There is more grace in this world than sin! And not just a little more, but MUCH more! Friends, there is hope for us, thank God! Can I get an amen???

Who is your favorite composer/arranger/musician/music hero?

Roger Bennett or Rodney Griffin, to be sure!

Roger Bennet was already a great musician when he started playing piano, singing, and writing songs (he was the piano player for one of the greatest and most well known Southern Gospel quartets, the Cathedrals), but he got better when the he got cancer, the Cathedrals retired, he launched his own group called Legacy Five with his best friend Scott Fowler (also from the Cathedrals up until they retired), and continued singing and playing piano and writing songs. He wrote Whispers in the Night, I've Read the Back of the Book, Don't Be Afraid, Healing, and many others. Roger Bennett died in 2007.

Rodney Griffin is really good too. He writes many wonderful songs, sings in Greater Vision, and *supposedly* plays saxophone (that's a southern gospel joke ;). He wrote Still, Waiting by the Well, and It Pays to Pray, along with many more!

I also love the songs that Diane Wilkinson wrote, and Mark Trammell and Gerald Wolfe are some of my favorite singers (both in their days with the Cathedrals and now that they have their own groups). I also like the Mylon Hayes family, the Bontrager Family Singers, and many others. But my top favorite musicians are Roger Bennett and Rodney Griffin.

Oh, and Isaac. Just to let you all know, my brother Isaac is an amazing composer, musician, arranger, singer, and everything. I've never met a better musician.

Are you all wondering why I have to take so long to answer a couple questions yet???

What is one random fun fact about you?

I don't like bell peppers. But that's not very fun or random. Hmm...

I love volleyball! But the person who asked this question already knows this...

I'm not a very random person! Okay, I'll try again. Besides, I am.

My personality type is INFP. There we go. ;)

What is your favorite part of blogging?

Being able to share with and bless others that I wouldn't be able to reach in this way! I love being able to share my poetry, share other people's poetry, and talk about music, poetry, family life, and other things. Oh, and I love comments. ;)

What is a secret talent of yours that many would be surprised to know?

Hmm... Secret talent that people would be surprised to know... Probably arguing, haha! Everyone always thinks I'm sweet and quiet, which I generally am. But I can DEFINITELY hold my own if I get fired up about something. Hand motions, strong arguments, facial expressions, evidence, and everything. I did debate for two years which probably helped.

I'm also good at pretending. I can say I'm happy, and look like I'm happy, and act like I'm happy, when really I'm not. And the other way around.

And I can also be EXTREMELY COMPETITIVE! Some of the other mothers of debaters who talked to my mom during debate season always could hardly believe her when she told them how I loved debate so much! But I thrived in the competition.

Okay, enough bragging about myself...

Laura's Questions:

Do you live in the country, city, or town?

50 acres in the country! I love it!

What's your favorite girl name?

Hmm... I love K names (especially Kate and Kitridge), and I love M names (especially Mallory and McKenzie).

What's your favorite board or card game?

Dutch Blitz! It's a family favorite!

Alright everyone! There ya' have it! If anyone missed the Q+A or has any last straggling questions, go ahead and ask and I'll answer them in the comments. Otherwise, I think we're done! Thanks to everyone who participated! I had a lot of fun with this and I hope you all did too!

And now, I have a question for you!

I've been thinking of starting a blog series. I have two ideas and, although I'll probably do both of them, I don't know that I should do both of them at the same time (although that's still an option). I'd probably try to post once a week about whatever I choose. Here's the two ideas:

1. Things that take our focus off of Christ or things that we try to find our identity inThere are a lot of things that we tend to find our identity in and this is one area I struggle in and I've been learning about.

2. Family lifeI've been thinking recently - you know, I've been just about everything. A little sister to older brothers. A big sister to little brothers. A big sister to little sisters. A daughter to a mother and a father. I've dealt with babies, toddlers, middle-aged kids, and adults as siblings. And I know I've had questions asked about being a sister and I've had requests for posts on younger siblings.

Let me know which you want to see most!

Be watching out for a long-overdue post - a tag by Laura @ Flowers in my Basket!

Now let's hear from you!

Have you enjoyed the Questions and Answers series? Which was your favorite question that I've answered? Are there any answers that surprised you? What are YOUR answers to some of these questions? Do you have any last minute questions? Which series do you think I should start first? Identity focus? Familyhood? Alternate between the two each week?

My 18th Birthday // Pictures from 2017-18

by Grace 8. February 2018 14:38

Hey Everyone!

Today is the day where I start a new chapter of my life...

I'm not an infant anymore!!!!!

Haha... Anyways...

I'm turning 18 today!

God has been so good in my life. He's taught me so much and brought me a long way, in spite of my occasional (or maybe regular...) stubborness. (My computer says stubborness isn't a word, by the way. Well, it is now!) I'm in awe of everything He's done in my life. Thank you Lord!

And my parents... What can I say??? They're the best. Thanks Mom and Dad! I love you and respect you for everything you've done for me and everyone else who you touch with your kindness and love!

And my two older brothers! Guys, I've got the best brothers a girl could ever ask for. Protective, loving, playful, godly... Isaac and Daniel, I love you! Thanks for being great brothers!

And my sister Abigail. Thanks for being the best sister ever! Love you!

And to the rest of my siblings... Jake, Jon, Olivia, Micah, Eli, and Jadon... I can't imagine life without you! You make life exciting and full of joy. Love you all! So proud to be your big sister!!!

And to friends and family all around, thanks! Love you all!

What better choice than Dutch Bro's drink of the month, the Birthday Cake Frost?

Soooo good!

Me last December.

Me at the coast last Saturday! My friends Julia, Kaitlynn, Kiersten, and my dear sister Abigail took me on a surprise outing to Newport for my Birthday. We had so much fun! I did accidentally fall in after wading around a little bit and working so hard not to get my clothes wet while I did... Haha! But that's a story for another time! Thanks for an epic adventure, girls!

While I'm here, listen to this song - one of my current FAVORITES and by my favorite songwriter, Rodney Griffin.

Still - Greater Vision

Goodbye until the end of midterms! Have a blessed day!

Now let's hear from you!

Were you all happy to see me again after a little while? Did you enjoy the pictures? Did you like the song?

Blog Tour: The Shield - Beth Jane

by Grace 25. January 2018 12:31

Hey everyone!

Today, I want to share with you the news that my friend Beth Jane is releasing her new book, The Shield! This is her first published book and I'm super excited to purchase myself a copy! I'm going to share an interview I did with Beth, but first of all, here's the description of the book - well, as a bonus, it's two books in one cover! Good deal, huh? Anywho, here's the book description:

But thou, O Lord, art a Shield for me; my glory, and the Lifter up of mine head.
The SHIELD.... Amy Riley is successful NYC photography, living in a gorgeous apartment with plenty of money.  She should be one of the happiest people on earth. But she's not? Why?
Because she's running from the calling God has for her in being a NYPD police officer. Fear grips her life. She feels she's not capable of the calling.
With God's help, Amy take's the Savior's hand and launches on the journey of being an officer. Pain grips so much of her life. Hurt from a dark past stays with her.

But the importance of doing what God says is discovered.
And most importantly, a SHIELD is found…. and is always there.

The SHIELD 2.... Lydia Myers is a survivor of human trafficking; only she still lives in complete pain and torment.
The lead singer for a local band, Lights, is also a survivor of human trafficking, but lives in peace and happiness.
The singer starts a small group for girls who have come from human trafficking, hoping to encourage and share with them how she found freedom in Christ. She shares with them how they can find freedom too.
Lydia attends, hoping to find a way to find peace. She's so tired of living in torment. She knows something has to change.

Fear threatens the lives of several citizens of NYC. But, a SHIELD is found... and rediscovered….

And now... Here's Beth! Hey Beth! Glad we could do this!

Hey Grace! Me too! Thanks so much!

I'd like to start with some random questions so that our readers can learn a little more about you.
1. Favorite icecream flavor?
Hmm... favorite icecream flavor... Probably Strawberry!
2. Favorite book?
Besides the Bible... The Swiss Courier by Tricia Goyer!
3. A pet peeve?
Umm... well I have serveral... but I'm not sure what to answer!
4. Favorite verse?
I'll say John 14:27 and John 16:33! It's just sums up so much!
5. Country or city?
Both, but more country!
6. Sweatpants and t-shirt or fancy dress?
Also both, loll! Anyone relate?!
7. Sweet or savory?
Savory!
8. Favorite color?
I like a lot of them! But I'll say Black!
9. What's a favorite memory?
God moments, and family and friend moments!
10. Alright, onto the author-related questions. When did you first want to start writing? How long after that did you start?
Well when I was younger I would write things in notebooks but then decided writing wasn't for me. But in 2014 (I think) I was washing dishes and I got an idea for a book about a girl disguising herself as a man and fighting in the Civil War. It was called The Secret Soldier and I starting working on it that day or the next day! That's when got the enjoyment for writing! Praise God! It's really a passion now!
11. Is "The Shield" the first story you wrote?
No, it's 4th fiction story I've came up with!
12. When and how did you decide to write "The Shield"?
I had sorta decided I wasn't good at writing before I started to write The Shield. But when I got the idea I was walking in the hallway of my grannie's house after watching a TV episode about police and it involved human trafficking and I thought that I wanted to come up with something like that. I first did it into a movie for my sister and then I started writing it. And that's what I started writing after I thought I wasn't good at it!
13. Do you have a favorite character? If so, who is it? Why is he or she your favorite?
My favorite character is actually two, Amy Riley and Jim Blake! And I just like them. Amy's cool and Jim is quite and real good to go. I also patterned Amy after myself (But I'm not saying I'm cool, LOL!)i
14. What is your overall theme for "The Shield"?
Overcoming fear!
15. How long did it take you to write it?
Well the first one was over a year or a little less, I don't remember really, and the second was just shy of seven months!
16. So, you said that your book is two stories in one book. Which was your favorite to write? Which one was easier to write?
The first was probably my fav! And they both had difficult times so I'm not sure, but probably the 1st one!
17. Did the second story come to you after you wrote the first one, at the same time, or while you were still working on the first one?
I think it came to me after I finished the first one and during the editing process but maybe while was still writing! I'm not sure!
18. If your readers could only remember one thing from reading your book, what would you want it to be?
That Jesus is greater!
Well, thank you so much for allowing me to do this! Congratulations on your first published book!
Thanks for doing it!! And Thanks so much!!! God Bless!!!

Questions and Answers Part 2: T0F Answers!

by Grace 19. January 2018 11:22

Hey everyone!

As you can see, I'm only posting T0F answers today. That's because I gave lengthened answers, and my responses to all of your questions were really long (some of them several paragraphs long). If you haven't guessed already, I'll post answers to your questions in more than one post. ;)

Well, here goes nothing!

1. I have glasses.
True! But I got them when I was seven, and went through about 8 in a year or two. I got contacts when I was 11, I believe.
2. I'm talkative and outgoing.
False. Not really. I’m generally pretty friendly, but I'm definitely an introvert.
3. I've had braces before.
False. My two older brothers have, though! One of them still has braces.
4. My favorite meal is taco salad.
TRUE!!!!! Beef is best, but chicken is good too. And LOTS of seasoning with LOTS of cumin!!!
5. My favorite songwriters are Jim Brady, Arthur Rice and Dennis Murphy. (I bet this'll be a hard one for you all!)
False. I do like some of the songs that these three wrote, but between the three of them, I only know around 9 songs that they wrote.
My favorites are hands down Rodney Griffin, Roger Bennet, and Diane Wilkinson.
6. I started writing poetry when I was 11.
False. I was nine when I first started.
7. I've worked at a fast food restaurant before.
False! I’ve worked at a high school and at county fairs before, but never at a fast food restaurant.
8. I don't know how to swim.
True.
9. I hate tapping.
TRUE.
10. I have a bad temper when roused.
True. It’s not very often, but I don’t get light feelings of anger. I’m either perfectly happy or extremely angry, usually only when I’m tired and hungry (hangry or tangry, as my cousin puts it.)
11. The four courses I'm currently taking for this second quarter for my paralegal program are Criminal Law, Real Estate Transactions, Legal Philosophy and Reasoning, and Faith and Vocation.
True! I’m really enjoying this quarter.
12. The courses I took for my last quarter were Common Law, Family Law, Faith and Vocation, and Tort Law.
False. I took Faith and Vocation this quarter – not last quarter.

Now let's hear from you!

Do you feel that you learned more about me? Was there anything you were surprised about? How many (if you guessed any) did you get right?

If you have more questions that you want me to answer, the Questions and Answers comment board is still open for more questions!!!

Questions and Answers (Q+A)

by Grace 11. January 2018 19:29

Hello everyone!

I saw that a lot of other bloggers often do these little thingys that they call Q+As (but my logical mind wants to call them questions and answers ;) and they looked like a lot of fun.

So I thought that I'd do one!

Go ahead and ask me any questions you want to -- about me, my music and poetry, my work, by beliefs, inspirations + aspirations + perspirations, and anything else you can think of in the comments.

Have fun with it!

And while you're at it, here's a true-or-false for you (or if we call questions and answers Q+As, T-0-fs). See how many things you know about me!

1. I have glasses.

2. I'm talkative and outgoing.

3. I've had braces before.

4. My favorite meal is taco salad.

5. My favorite songwriters are Jim Brady, Arthur Rice and Dennis Murphy. (I bet this'll be a hard one for you all!)

6. I started writing poetry when I was 11.

7. I've worked at a fast food restaurant before.

8. I don't know how to swim.

9. I hate tapping.

10. I have a bad temper when roused.

11. The four courses I'm currently taking for this second quarter for my paralegal program are Criminal Law, Real Estate Transactions, Legal Philosophy and Reasoning, and Faith and Vocation.

12. The courses I took for my last quarter were Common Law, Family Law, Faith and Vocation, and Tort Law.

Now let's hear from you!

What are some questions you all may have for me? Is there anything that you've always wondered about me? What are your answers to the T-0-Fs?

Song Suggestion: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

by Grace 12. December 2017 15:19

Hey everyone! Let's have a show of hands for how many of you like gooood a'cappella music!!! Oh, wait. Never mind. Guess I can't really see your hands. ;)

Anyhow... Here's the song. This is the best version of this song out there, if you ask me. But so many different southern gospel groups all sing this same song that way, that I could probably put a recording of a different group singing this exact same version (with minor tweaks, of course) every day for the rest of December. But I won't do that. So far, I think this is my favorite recording that I've heard yet. Without further ado, here's Triumphant Quartet singing God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? Have you heard this arrangement before?

Special Post: Poem/Song Suggestion

by Grace 7. December 2017 21:08

Hey everyone!!!

I have something special for y'all today! (: Here's a poem I wrote a few years ago:

Humble Baby Born so Low

Humble Baby born so low,

Put inside a manger bed;

Born within a noisy stall,

With no pillow for his head.

Shepherds left their flocks to roam

Gazing at the Christmas star,

Gathered staffs and headed out,

Went to Bethlehem so far.

Wise men followed the bright star

With myrrh frankincense and gold

As gifts for the little child,

This a tale to be retold!

Thank God for his gift of love

That he gave us Christmas day,

Let us show our gratitude

By walking the holy way!

Copyright © 2014 by Grace Helland

Now here's the special thing about this post - follow this link and go to 40:41 and you will see us performing this song last year at our Christmas program! I know some of you have asked if I could post a video of me singing some of my songs in the past, so I thought you all would like it. (: I wrote the lyrics, created my own tune, and then wrote out all the four harmony parts. Hard work, but I love doing it! It's a passion of mine! I wish I had more time on my hands to do it. (: Anyhow, enough of my chatter. ;)

P.S. Credit to my siblings Abigail and Daniel for key change suggestions and having one person start and then everyone gradually join in on the first verse. <3

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like my song? Were you happy that I FINALLY posted one of my own songs for you to hear? How did you like our a'cappella arrangement that I made? Do y'all know HOW EXCITED I was to share this with you????? ;)

Christmas Song Suggestion: Ring Christmas Bells

by Grace 3. December 2017 13:01

Hey everyone!

Since there's only like 4 weeks until Christmas, I'll be sharing Christmas song suggestions more regularly than once a week. Here's a treat for y'all: the song I'm sharing with you is a video of me and my siblings singing "Ring Christmas Bells" last year at our Christmas concert that we had at our church with some of our friends. The order we're standing in is: Abigail, Jacob, Daniel, then me. Hope you like it! Let me know what you think. (:

Ring Christmas Bells

Now let's hear from you!

Did you like the song? Do you think we did a good job with it and used a good arrangement? Would you be interested in seeing more videos of us singing songs? Comment and let me know your thoughts!

When Life is...

by Grace 26. July 2017 18:24

Hey all! Sorry I've been gone so long. Life got a hold and wouldn't let go! I wrote this today on the whim. Let me know what you think!

When Life Is...

When life is a smog that I can't see through,
Help me to lean more heavily on you
When life is misty with tears from a loss
Help me to trust you, not count you as the cause
When life is hot and I'm full of pride
Help me to step down and let you decide
When life is cold with rigid fear
Help me remember you're always near

Help me remember you're the Author of Life
And that you're in control through joy and strife.

Now let's hear from you!

Did you enjoy this poem? Are you in any of these areas of life right now? Have any title suggestions? My title wasn't to good... Do you think I portrayed my theme of "Pointing Life back to God" well? Did you miss my presence in the blogosphere?Wink

P.S. Keep a lookout for the new page on the sidebar that's coming soon!! Smile
